The folks at famitsu.com sat with yoshinori Ono, after the announcement of the Street Fighter X Tekken game last saturday, to discuss this new game. Ono san went ahead and talked about the gameplay, characters and release date. Andriasang.com were cool enough to translate the whole interview which you can read here.
These are the highlights from the interview:
- The game will come out in TWO years
- Gameplay will be like SF4 with 6 buttons but with a possible assist command for a 2 vs 2 mode.
- Characters will probably be from the first generation of each franchise.

“Characters will probably be from the first generation of each franchise.”
So no Cody, no Makoto, no Viper, no Abel, none of the cool, newer characters–just the same 20-year old cast that they keep rehashing over and over again. Probably.
Maybe it’s just me, but I’m tired of the original eight, I’m tired of the Champion Edition twelve, and the four “new challengers” are getting stale, too. While I expect Ryu and Chunster to be in just about everything, I’d much rather see some characters from Third Strike and IV in there.
NOT a complaint, just an observation.

Yeah I think the franchise has to build like the marvel vs capcom series…it started as x-men vs street fighter…..so….it might be a few characters from each series this time…but who knows….maybe the sequal will be Capcom vs Namco………dreams my friends…..dreams

First generation? So maybeno fei long since he was super from SSFII? If Forest or marshall Law and Fei Long fought, That would bend the laws of time and space and considered a time space paradox…

There are many ways of making the OG street fighters fresh again. They just have to have new moves or all there moves. I just finished watching the video for the 612th time, the start of the video shows a couple things that make this game fresh and NEW!
Ryu can do MORE moves!!!!!
Fireballs, EX
Hurricane kicks, EX and (air)
Slide Kicks, EX and wall bounce
DP’s, EX, and they Juggle. 2 DP’s in a row? Hell yeah
Now all we need is a fake fireball, air grabs, Focus attacks, supers, ultras, team supers, random events, stage ko’s, reverse ko’s, and final ko’s.
The cool thing is I never played that much IRON FIST so when you add all the old characters to this game they become brand new characters. I want Capcom to add new moves to the Tekken players. I want to see Paul HIGH TOP to throw a punch fireball.
What I am most afraid of is a Tag game with character assist moves. I want one on one fighting with character change in and out, but for the love of GOD not MvC3 assist moves every three secs.
I never understood why people like to jump into other peoples fights? When ever we fought in high school it was always one on one. If someone jumped in then everyone jumped in and stopped it.
Could you imagine if you watched a UFC match and Brock was pounding on Bob Sagat and then Kimbo slice jumped in with a bat to help Brock? Then Tom Cruise jumped in with Oprah and started doing CLOWN SHOE MOVES? Then OBAMA jumped in and started telling everyone to settle down while he stole money out of everyone’s pockets!!!!!!! Then Capt Kangaroo jumped in and started beeming people with ping pong balls. Right the Jesus came down from heaven and started doing walking on water moves and beatting people with a cross while riding a white horse.
yeah I know it sounds ridiculous. That is what character assist button means to me.

Greedy….me and you….we’re on the same level….I COULD NOT agree more with that statement I as well wished for 1 on 1….but unfortunately when It’s VS. series ya kinda gotta expect some form of tag-team….I’m crossing my fingers that the other game is 1 on 1…..

Cammy, please
Greedy McNasty | July 28, 2010 at 9:14 pm
Yeah! Right on!
One on one will be sweet. Team supers would be fine.
@Matt
Then you would really love my old 480 page character added moves and changes I put on Capcom-unity that gets removed, locked, moved, any time I put it up online. Oh and yes I know that the MvC3 game will be filled with character assists x 1000 per match. Sure would be nice if they limited the number of assists, once per round.
I have been trying to get moves added to SF for 15 years straight. From written books sent to EGM,EGM2, Move lists and ideas written in a Bible size notebook sent to midway and GIVEN……PLACED IN THE HANDS OF 2 MIDWAY PROGRAMMERS.
I have notebooks on every damn fighting game I have owned for the past billion years. I can’t enjoy the fighting game I have because I always can find a way or come up with a new idea that could make the game better……..Or in some cases broken.
I have had 2 people that have read my stuff and sent me back comments, A comic book artist….and a ARCADE OWNER/Guile player. Both hated 95% of my ideas but loved the other 5%.
I will not rest till someone combines every GOOD thing in fighting games. Then makes the very best fighting game in the world. SSF4 has every shot at being the game that can be added to or changed as the years go on.
I am really into games made with open hooks so future SYSTEMS can be added at a later time. Then comes the cost vs effect of the small things I think add to the flavor or feel of a fighting game.
Character intro’s….we get to see ONE!!!!! or should I say we get to skip over one over and over. 4 per character would be a good start. Would it be worth the time and money. YES! Would I buy DLC to pay for the new intro’s? YES! Six times over.
See then I go on this huge rant and get all these ideas about a game that is 2 years off.
My advice to Ono San……….Put in everything that makes people drop there JAWS, and then add more.
Own or borrow it all.
special moves
supers
ultras
ditch moves
team supers and team ko’s
random events
stage ko’s
String combos
target combos
ultra combos
story lines and bios from hell
hidden characters
unlockables
starbursts different colors
bonus stages…..a crap ton of them. Tekken had bowling, street fighter has car buster, barrels, bricks,an old fighting street mini game.
GO BIG!
The last time my Jaw hit the floor because I had never layed eyes on a new system was Killer Instinct.
A talking announcer, that screams combo’s, ultra combos, a forced dance move, finishers, stage ko’s, story lines, endings, crazy combos.
I hope STREET FIGHTER x TEKKEN will bring back that crazy OH MY GOSH!!!! FEELING AGAIN.

@ Greedy:
I agree with you, but we both know that they won’t give the new characters any significant new moves. Even Ryu’s slide kick isn’t really new, it’s been around since SF3: New Generation. Capcom then dumped the move (because we all know he only “needs” Hadouken, Shoryuken and Hurricane kick) and are only now giving it back to him.
Let’s assume Guile is in the game. Do you really think he’ll have a new move other than Flash Kick and Sonic Boom? I doubt it. Those are the only special moves he’s ever had. More than likely, if Guile is in, it’ll be the same old tactics we’ve seen and done over and over again. Yawn.
My ideas for making the original eight fresh and new are so radical that Capcom would never implement them. Hopefully whatever they do works, somewhat. This is a Day 1 purchase, but it looks like I’ll be using Capcomized Tekken characters, to make it fun. And I’ll be losing to people who spam 20-year old moves that they can do in their sleep.

@ Greedy
I think being a fan of any genre of games means you have your own ideas and preferences to that perticular genre….so while I do agree with your ideas and changes….I disagree with the fact you are sitting around waiting for other people to do it……the man who made Guilty Gear made the first one in his basement….and now Blazblue just released in America yesterday….anyways my point is….you seem like you know the right people…..get it done yourself…..maybe that’s harder to do than I think….but….noone else is gonna do it….
Greedy McNasty | July 29, 2010 at 5:43 pm
@ Both of you!
Good stuff, I am too old to start going to a video game school to learn how to program. Besides I don’t have an extra 70k to do so.
Yep here is to Guile having more than 2 moves, and to Ryu getting his slide kick and fake hadoken.

You know people are kinda surprised and otherwise disappointed at the release date of Street Fighter X Tekken……..but I think it takes time….balancing issues/tekken character moves……time to perfect…..I can hold off
