strange sounding description of the upcoming Mortal Kombat Movie reboot

For months now, you have known that a Mortal Kombat movie reboot is in the works, with Kevin Tancharoen (the guy behind the amazing Mortal Kombat Legacy web series) directing the feature film.

News about the movie plot have been almost nonexistent, up until today, where bloody-disgusting reported a very strange sounding description for the movie story.

According to the site, the plot goes like this: “the live-action reboot will follow a lowly unlucky supermarket employee who discovers that he has out of this world powers and must decide between good and evil, even though the evil side has helped him discover his true potential and who he really is. ”

Definitely not a promising synopsis for an adaptation of a martial art/fantasy/gory video game. Keep checking back here, as we try to confirm the above news with Warner Bors.

10 things that must happen in the next Mortal Kombat Movie!

Back in 1994, i was 12 years old and i remember the excitement i got when i read in a french video games magazine that a movie based on the Mortal Kombat series was in the works. I cannot possibly describe how happy i was, a movie about my favorite fighting game? a chance to see sub-zero and scorpion in live action? a chance to see sub-zero’s spine rip fatality on the big screen? Boy was i excited.

I could not wait for 1995 to be able to witness how will the movie be. A year later i got my hands on the MK movie, and while it did not have any blood in it (not even a single drop dammit) it sure did its job in representing the lore. It might not have been a master piece, but the first Mortal Kombat was a good action flick that i still watch to this day from time to time. Something i cannot say for its sequel, the 1997′s Mortal Kombat annihilation! a crap fest that lived to its tagline, which ironically was” Destroy all expectation”. MK Annihilation did destroy my expectation, and the expectation of millions who thought that a fighting video game could translate into a movie series. The movie was so bad that it killed the films series. A sequel to this abomination was in hiatus since 1997, with many actors and directors who got attached to the project then dropped from it. It seemed there was no way to continue from that movie, and early talks of a remake of annihilation were happening in the beggining of the millenium. Talks that stayed what they were, just talks.

ComingSoon interviews Kevin Tancharoen: New movie will not be a continuation of the Legacy series

Talking to Comingsoon.net, Director Kevin Tancharoen confirmed that the upcoming Mortal KombatMovie will not be a continuation of the successful web series MK: Legacy.

CS: Is this something that’s going to continue elements of the web series?
Tancharoen:
No, this is a new take and it’s not going to continue directly off of the web series. There will be elements that are familiar to the people that have watched it, but it is its own movie. I wanted to make sure that, regardless of anything else, that it’s a good movie. It doesn’t have to be something that you will have had to have seen all ten episodes previously to understand or have played the videogame to understand. It’ll live on its own and be its own film and will hopefully be something that can continue on. It’s such a big story that you could have two or three movies, but I want to make sure that the first one is good on its own.

While he cannot confirm the characters that will appear nor if the MK legacy actors will reprise their roles in the movie, Kevin did, however, promised that we will see many of our favorite characters in the 2013 movie.

Mortal Kombat Movie director says he is aiming for a rated “R” brutal Movie!

Talking to EW.com, director of the recently announced Mortal Kombat movie, Kevin Tancharoen affirmed that he is aiming for a rated “R” brutal movie.

Kevin Tancharoen: “Up to this point, we’ve only been talking ‘rated R, I like realistic takes on things, I like it when it’s a little darker and grittier. And I want the martial arts to feel real as opposed to balletic and super-choreographed. It needs to feel brutal, because that’s the nature of the video game itself.

While it might be considered a no brainer, that a movie based on a violent video game will be also violent, one must remember that the two MK movies that came in the nineties were both rated PG-13.

The new Mortal Kombat movie reboot is being developed by New Line Cine (a subsidiary of Warner Bros) and is planned for a 2013 release.
